Why Independent Site Monitoring & Inspection is now more vital than ever
Engagement of an Independent Site Inspector has long been an established way for Clients to have a representative visit their site to record events, monitor building quality and overseeing conformance to the contract documents. This role on many projects has been seen as essential, especially when contractual disputes arise and the records from an independent third party can be used as a factual unbiased source of information.
Some consider that given the current economic situation that employing such an essential role is now not affordable. This is in fact a false economy, if ever there was a time when such a service was need it is now. With Contractors working hard to win contracts by submitting the lowest tender comes the risk to Clients of short cuts in quality, and an increase in claims in order to make up short falls in tender prices.

Today it is true that many Contractors are professional in their approach, and owing to strict internal and external audits, maintain a high standard of operations compliant with their QA System. However, it is also true that although a QA Registered Contractor can boast of a well-managed paperwork system, the same is not always true when it comes to supervising works out on site. Defects and failures still occur even though a Contractor is QA Registered.
Independent Site Inspectors & Clerk of works provide reassurance, and peace of mind that the activities being carried out are inline with the contract documents and general good practice. They monitor the conditions that works are carried out in to ensure that it meets manufacturers recommendations. They witness tests to verify that the works meet specified requirements. They monitor progress against programme so that an independent view of where the contract is at any given stage is balanced against the contractors own assessments. By providing weekly reports they are able to advise on all aspects of the works in progress and highlight any concerns.
Since being established in 1997, Wessex Site Inspection has been involved in almost 300 projects, many of them high value, high profile schemes where we have provided Building and Mechanical & Electrical expertise. By using our own software systems we have been able to provide a standardised system of works which adapts to the needs of each specific Project.
It is accepted by many within the industry that management of quality and Contract conformance is best carried out by an independent organisation such as WSI. With the increase in the use of the NEC/EEC suite of Contracts the independent Site Inspector is an obvious choice to carry out the Supervisor role. WSI have past experience and specific duties documentation dedicated to carrying out this role on site on behalf of the Clients and Design Practices.
